REFRESH/UPDATE your STCW Safety Training – don’t leave it too late!

The Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention (STCW 2010) bring a raft of changes along.  One of the most significant amendments is the requirements for all seafarers to update some elements of the mandatory STCW safety training.

From 1 January 2017 (so you have until December 31, 2016, to refresh your courses.)
“If you are serving on board ship and are qualified in any of the following you must as of the 1 January 2017 have documentary evidence of either completing the training course or updating training within the last 5 years”

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting;
Advanced Fire Fighting;
Personal Survival Techniques;
Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats); and
Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats.

“Dockwalk” have recently blogged about it: http://www.dockwalk.com/Essentials/HotTopics.aspx?id=186804  So you can read more info about it there!

Excerpts from the Dockwalk article:
“The refresher courses are not a one off — the regulations state that they need to be refreshed every five years.”

What if I don’t complete the courses in time?
“We are facing a disturbing reality for those who continue to ignore the deadline for completion of these courses,” says Sands. “Failure to take the courses will mean you are not legally allowed to be employed as crew on a yacht above a twenty-four-meter load line length come 2017, whether commercial or private.”
